Description
Running at an angle to the transverse through the middle of the specimen is a portion of the hyoid
bone. Below is a 1.5 cm ovoid cyst, and above is a 1.5 cm fibrous cord. The cord and cyst are in
continuity, the cyst representing the dilated portion of the thyroglossal duct and the cord, the almost
obliterated portion, running to the base of the tongue.
History
This woman at the age of 28, noticed a lump in her neck, it varied in size but there was
no pain. Examination showed a lump in the left upper part of the neck below the hyoid bone and
above the thyroid. The lump was mobile and not tender and could just be seen to move with her
tongue.
